For those who have wondered what the chrome tubes on semi-trucks are actually for, this is why they are there.
Semi-trucks have large chrome tubes, also known as cylinders or canisters, which are often mounted outside the engine bay of the truck.
Some have believed that they are fuel tanks, or perhaps oil tanks, but neither of those is true.
In reality, the chrome tubes are important housings for some of the truck’s air-based systems, helping not only to optimize its performance, but also its efficiency.

What do the chrome tubes on semi-trucks actually do?
The tubes are housings for the air-cleaning systems of the truck, including its air filter.
These are some of the most important parts of the whole truck.
Semi-trucks use them to ensure the engines breathe properly, and they optimize their performance.
The air systems also ensure the engine runs as efficiently as possible.

Semi-trucks without the large tubes still have these systems.
But they are mounted under the hood and are often found on more modern trucks.
The air filters ensure no dirt or debris gets into the system, allowing only clean air to pass into the engine.
There are two types of air filters on trucks: wet and dry.
The two filters on the trucks work in different ways
Dry filters use, as you would expect, dry filter materials that look like fabric or paper.
That is how they ensure that no dirt and debris enter the engine of the semi.
Wet filters have an additional thin coating of oil.
This helps to trap the finest particles and stop them from passing into the engine, adding an extra layer of protection.
Another difference is that dry filters are disposable and should be replaced when they are too dirty.

However, wet filters can be cleaned and reused, meaning you don’t have to replace them regularly.
Dirty filters will mean air is restricted from getting to the engine, meaning less oxygen for combustion.
That will decrease the efficiency of the engine and also lower its performance.
A clean filter ensures a happy truck engine.
So you now know that those large chrome tubes on semi-trucks are there for more than just cosmetic reasons.
