People are stunned after they have begun to find out what Ferrari actually means away from the supercar company.

Ferrari is possibly the most famous name in the automotive industry, having produced some of the finest supercars, sports cars, and grand tourers for generations.

Commonly known as the ‘Prancing Horse’, Ferrari’s history is incredibly rich, but not everybody knows what the name actually means.

A Reddit post gave some answers, leaving people stunned as to the origins of the name, with the company itself taking its name from founder Enzo Ferrari.

Where the Ferrari name can trace its origins

The supercar company itself takes its name from Enzo Ferrari, the man who founded it back in 1939.

But the meaning of the name itself is a little bit different.

The name comes from the Italian word ‘ferraro’.

In Italian, Ferrari means ‘blacksmith’ or ‘ironworker’, an industry that was once common across the country.

While Enzo Ferrari is one of the most famous to use the name, it is actually a very common surname in Italy.

Think of it as the Italian equivalent of ‘John Smith’, one of the most common names in America.

The name became most famous thanks to Enzo and his legendary car company.

But where do other manufacturers’ names come from?

Other car manufacturers and their names

Another Italian car manufacturer is, of course, Maserati.

The company took its name from the founding Maserati family of Italy, with the name derived from the Italian word ‘massaio’, which means farm manager.

American manufacturer Chevrolet took its name from the surname of its co-founder, Swiss-American race car driver and engineer Louis Chevrolet.

The Chevrolet name has French origins, coming from the Old French word ‘chevreuil’, which means roebuck or deer.

Another American automotive giant is Ford, derived from the Old English word ‘ford’.

A ford is a shallow place to cross a river.

For the company itself, Ford took its name from founder Henry Ford.

Ferruccio Lamborghini created the Lamborghini company using his own name.

It too is an Italian surname, and has origins in the word ‘Lambere’, which means to drink or taste in Latin and Italian.

As we can see, car manufacturers’ names have their origins in all sorts of places.
