When scanning the runway from the window of the departures lounge, you may have noticed that airplanes are always painted white, but what you might not know, is there are a number of very important reasons behind it.

It hasn’t always been this way, but it’s changed over time for good reason.

From safety reasons to the sun and even damage control, the color choice actually makes a big difference.

Plus, money plays a huge role in the decision, too.

Why airplanes are always painted white

Planes vary hugely, from size to cost and capability, but they almost always have one thing in common.

Nowadays, planes are always white, and even though the color choice is simple and plain, there are a collection of interesting reasons for why this is.

In a video shared by aviation company Menkor Aviation, they revealed the color actually reflected sunlight the best, meaning it would best deflect heat from the sun.

Plus, it also helps to prevent the effects of solar radiation.

It’s the same logic as black attracting heat rather than preventing it, when you think about it.

The next reason for the color is that white simply fades more slowly than other colors.

Brighter and more vibrant colors tend to fade faster and look worn out very quickly.

Repainting can even add between 250kg and 550kg to the weight of the plane, as well as a few hundred thousand dollars in bills.

But that’s not all, there are more reasons for why airplanes are always painted white, including it being easier to spot damage and it preventing birds from being hurt.

Changing of ownership is also easier with a white shell.

And finally, white paint is just so much more cost-effective.

“Aircraft paints are a special blend of polyurethane paints and various catalysts and activators. They are much more expensive than paints found in supermarkets for interior decoration,” Menkor Aviation said.

Plus, thanks to the sheer size of planes, there’s a lot of surface to cover, which means a lot of money needs to be spent, but luckily, as white is cheaper, everyone is a winner.

Pilots explain aircraft fears

The world of aviation can be confusing for a lot of people.

From design choices to mechanics, there are lots of questions that passengers have questions about.

And to help minimize flying fear, pilots are answering some of our most-asked questions.

For starters, one pilot explained why you don’t need to be worried about turbulence.

And another pilot revealed that only two windows on an airplane actually open and showed where they were located.
