The button on seatbelts has always been there, but it might be the most overlooked seatbelt feature in your car.

And that’s mostly because no one knows what it actually does.

Now, thanks to a viral TikTok, drivers are finally realizing what that small plastic stopper is for.

And once you know, you’ll wonder how you missed it.

Be honest – did you know what it was for?

You’ve probably seen that little plastic button on your seatbelt a thousand times… but never really thought about it.

When TikToker lukefacts explained what it does, millions were surprised.

“The little button on your seatbelt is to stop the buckle from going past it,” he said.

That’s it. It keeps the metal buckle from sliding too far down the belt, so you don’t have to dig around beside your seat to find it.

Comments on the viral TikTok ranged from shocked to slightly smug.

“Wow that seatbelt one blew my mind,” one person wrote. Another admitted: “Not me passing that button so many times.”

But there were also those who said it was obvious all along. “I thought we all knew about the seatbelt,” one person wrote.

Still, the reaction proves it’s a seatbelt feature most people never realized they depended on.

The button on seatbelts makes life easier

It’s easy to overlook, but this tiny plastic button – known as a stop button or retainer button – is doing more work than it gets credit for.

Most cars have two: one near the base, one near the shoulder anchor. Together, they hold the buckle exactly where it needs to be.

You might not notice them now, but you will if one breaks and your buckle suddenly drops to the floor or slides out of reach.

So, while it might be the smallest seatbelt feature in your car, it definitely deserves its kudos.

After all, it’s been saving you time and frustration for years.
