Why the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento will never be seen on US roads 

The stunning limited edition Lamborghini Sesto Elemento is about as rare a car as you can find. 

Produced in 2012, the lightweight supercar has a breathtaking top speed in excess of 320km/h (200mph). 

Lamborghini produced just 20 units, and it’s unlikely we’ll ever see anything like it again.

Especially in the US, where the Sesto Elemento didn’t meet the requirements to be street-legal.

The Lamborghini Sesto Elemento was super lightweight

While most car lovers are familiar with many of the marque’s motors such as the Lamborghini Huracán Performante or the Countach, which turned 45 years old this year – you’d be forgiven for not knowing about the Sesto Elemento.

The car could easily slip under the radar of even the most ardent gearheads due to the fact that it was never introduced to US roads. 

Nonetheless, the car truly is a thing of beauty. 

Debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, the Sesto Elemento was all about taking the iconic Lamborghini supercar formula and making it as lightweight as possible.

In fact, the Sesto Elemento is one of Lamborghini’s lightest supercars (999 kg). 

It keep it lightweight, virtually every major component is made out of carbon fiber.

This is also where the car gets its name—‘Sesto Elemento’ translates to ‘Sixth Element’, and carbon is the sixth element on the periodic table.

The supercar really packed a punch

The Sesto Elemento’s body is made slightly differently from your average car. 

It uses a special plastic and carbon fiber composite covered in a thin layer of glossy paint with reflective micro-crystals incorporated into the design. 

Under the hood, the car was fitted with the 5.2 liter V10 from the Gallardo Superleggera and produces 562 horsepower. 

All that power means the car is capable of some impressive speeds – it can do 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in just 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 356km/h (221mph).

The Sesto Elemento launched with a hefty $2.92 million price tag.

Rumors at the time suggested Lamborghini may have had some difficulty shifting all 20 units – due to a lack of interest for such an expensive car that wasn’t road-legal. 

Either way, the car still earns itself a very special place in the history of Lamborghini. 

“Every future Lamborghini will be touched by the spirit of Sesto Elemento,” said CEO Stephan Winkelmann.
