Fifteen years after the original, ‘I am Legend’ is getting a sequel.

The film was a major success, taking in USD$77 million on opening, which at the time was the largest-ever box office opening for a non-Christmas film released in December.

I Am Legend then went on to earn more than USD $585 million at the box office globally.

Considering its success, it’s a bit surprising it took this long for a sequel.

According to reports, the I Am Legend sequel will be produced by Academy Award-winner Akiva Goldsman.

The script-writer famously adapted Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name for the 2007 film.

The plot of the first film followed Robert Neville, a scientist, who become the last human survivor of a plague in New York.

He then attempted to find a way to reverse the effects of the man-made virus by using his own immune blood.

Naturally things don’t turn out to be so straightforward.

While plot details are not currently known about the sequel, it will mark the first time Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan will be on screen together.

In fact, Will Smith apparently turned down a return to the sequel when it was first proposed but Jordan’s pitch for the film changed his mind.

Smith himself confirmed his return with this Instagram post:

The film is still in its developmental stage so not much else is known about it.

In the meantime, you can watch Will Smith in King Richard, for which he just received a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.

And Michael B. Jordan is currently filming the hotly anticipated third film in the Creed film series.
