A California woman who has a LUVSICK license plate on her Dodge Magnum R/T says she’s been inundated with tickets for traffic violations she didn’t commit thanks to her unusual plates.

Suzi Kiefer has had the LUVSICK license plate on her car for more than 20 years, but in May this year, she began receiving tickets for traffic violations.

Since then, she’s been sent more than a dozen tickets, including some from states she’s never even visited.

And it turns out, it’s all because of her LUVSICK plates.

The LUVSICK license plate has caused a lot of heart ache for its owner

Personalized, or vanity, license plates can be big business – the owner of a Lamborghini Urus forked out a whopping $53,000 to get his hands on a special plate, while a man in the UK turned down a $10 million offer for his super-rare plate.

However, it seems that there can be a downside to owning vanity plates, and we don’t just mean the cost.

Since May this year, Suzi Kiefer has been sent 15 tickets for running red lights, speeding, and toll road violations in various states, including Texas and New Jersey.

However, Kiefer says none of the violations were actually committed by her.

And it turns out it’s all down to her LUVSICK license plate.

Kiefer has owned the plate for more than two decades, but a nationwide retailer recently began selling novelty plates with LUVSICK written on them.

The novelty plates have several differences from the real deal, including the words ‘Broken Promises’ where the state name should be and the word ‘EMO’ where a valid month would usually be.

But it seems that those changes weren’t enough to stop the plates from being flagged by automated enforcement cameras and Kiefer being identified as the registered owner of the plates.

In a bid to stop the tickets, Kiefer hired a lawyer who sent a cease and desist to the manufacturer of the plates, which resulted in them being withdrawn from sale, CBS reported

She was also able to prove that the tickets came from a range of different makes and had them dismissed, but she remains concerned about folks who still may be out there driving around with the novelty plates on.

It’s not the only time novelty plates have caused a problem

Kiefer isn’t the only US driver to find themselves being hit with a steady slew of undeserved traffic tickets thanks to novelty plates.

A New York woman who bought herself some custom Star Trek-inspired plates had a similar problem

She bought license plates that matched those on the USS Enterprise: NCC-1701.

But five years on from her purchase, she was still getting sent tickets despite no longer even owning the car, because of the widely available NCC-1701 novelty plates.
