Station wagons – or tourers as they’re sometimes known – might not be synonymous with high speeds, but the fastest station wagon to exist is definitely an interesting example.

You would naturally expect it to be something along the lines of BMW M-series or even some Audi models.

That is if they can even be called station wagons in the first place.

We’ll give you a hint — it’s a tourer made back in 2003 and features a V8 engine.

World’s fastest station wagon is the most unexpected name

Meet Morris Garages’ MG ZT-T Bonneville, the fastest station wagon to ever exist.

Before we dive into the details, yes, it’s an MG Rover — and yes, it’s a tourer from over two decades ago.

At first glance, it might not seem all that special compared to other wagons from the time.

However, if you know the hardware it’s packing, you will understand that it’s the real deal, if anything.

The MG ZT-T Bonneville was a result of the automaker’s distinct sports car division back then.

MG practically gave too much headroom for its development teams to build this car.

When you give enthusiasts enough money for R&D, they obviously go all-in.

The project, codenamed ‘X-15,’ had only one goal — to break the 200mph speed barrier for estate cars.

The team at MG fitted the Bonneville with a NASCAR-powered V8 engine, which was inspired from its predecessor, the MG ZT.

The original ZT already had an overwhelming V8 engine built upon the MG Rover 75, but the ZT-T aspired to break all records.

The absolute raw power of the MG ZT-T Bonneville

Thanks to the the NASCAR V8, the ZT-T Bonneville sent out over a whopping 800 horsepower and revved up to 9,500RPM.

With all that power, the Bonneville was tested at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats and achieved the maximum speed ever recorded for a station wagon.

How fast did it go, you ask?

The speedometer hit 225.6mph (373 km/h), and it earned a place for the world’s fastest station wagon in the Guinness World Records.

Unlike most other tourers like the Cadillac DeVille, it wasn’t about practicality.

That was a remarkable feat, but that wasn’t the end of it.

Apparently, the MG ZT-T Bonneville holds the record to this day, and no other estate car has broken that top speed yet.

The NASCAR-powered V8 is certainly not something to joke around, and the world record is proof.

Not many of these are around now, and those that are driveable reside safely in car collections.
