The world’s most expensive C2 Corvette once sold for a staggering $3.85 million at auction, and now it’s on the hunt for a new home.

The 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 earned a spot in the history books in 2014 after selling for the record-breaking sum.

A decade on, it went under the hammer again. This time it was snapped up for an almost-as-impressive $3.2 million.

This year, the car has been placed up for auction three times but has failed to sell; so could it be a case of fourth time lucky?

What makes this the world’s most expensive C2 Corvette?

The iconic Corvette had already been in production for over a decade and a half when, in 1967, Chevy introduced the high-performance 7.0-liter V8 engine known as the L88.

The engine was officially rated at 430 horsepower, although it’s reportedly capable of upwards of 500hp.

However, the L88 was around for a good time, not a long time, and by 1969, Chevy had retired the beefed-up engine.

As well as being a more race-ready engine than the standard C2 V8, the L88 was also a more pricey option and therefore wasn’t as big a seller for Chevrolet.

In 1967, just 20 units were produced, and today there are thought to be only around 10 or so left, which goes some way to explaining why in 2014 one of them sold for $3.85 million.

The car, which is the only known Rally Red example in the world, set a new record and became the most expensive C2 Corvette ever sold.

After being sold at auction for $3.2m in 2024, the ‘Vette headed to auction on three separate occasions this year, but despite pulling in bids of upwards of $2.5m, it failed to sell.

Next year, it’s set to go under the hammer again at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2026 auction in January.

Whether it will sell or not remains to be seen, but it’s certainly going to be one to watch when it passes the auction block.

The Rally Red L88 isn’t the most expensive ‘Vette that’s ever sold

Although the Rally Red 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 is the most expensive C2 in the world, it isn’t the most expensive Corvette ever sold.

The first-place title belongs to the 1957 SS XP-64.

The one-off vehicle not only surpassed the C2’s record, pushing it into second place, but absolutely obliterated it, pulling in a mind-blowing $7.7 million at auction in February this year.
