The owner of a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox was quite surprised when his car threw up an unusual message on the infotainment system.

American Trave Hodges from Michigan posted the unusual message on his TikTok – @atastewithtrav – and the situation amused many viewers.

The infotainment system stated that Equinox’s last update was nearly 50 years before the car was built.

Cue a very confused Hodges, who had no idea where the message had come from or why it had confused the dates.

The message stated the Chevrolet was last updated in 1970

In his TikTok video, Hodges shows us what the screen threw at him as he started up the car.

Here’s the message in full:

“Checking for updates. Last checked for updates on 1/1/1970 at 12:00 am.”

Something’s definitely up, as that date is clearly long before Chevrolet built the Equinox.

The caption he added to the video, ‘My car is trippin,’ alongside a laughing emoji, perfectly sums up the situation.

“When your car was built in 2019. But the last checked update was 1970; that doesn’t add up, sunshine,” Hodges went on, referencing the message.

Naturally, he was quite confused by what his car had thrown up at him.

However, there is a logical explanation, and that’s down to the operating system within the car’s infotainment software.

Infotainment issues created the unusual message in the Equinox

DevOps engineer Gary Stewart explained on Quora what might have caused the problem in the SUV.

The Equinox runs the Unix operating system, and the time in the message is based on Unix’s epic time.

That time is January 1st, 1970, and nearly every computer system reverts to it if it is reset.

That reset can occur if systems are not updated in some time.

Which explains why Hodge received the weird pop-up on his infotainment system.

Issues with the infotainment systems in the Equinox aren’t unheard of, particularly with the 2019 model.

For instance, one Reddit user posted on the subreddit r/chevy that the radio in their 2019 Equinox kept turning off and on randomly while driving.

Back to Hodge’s video, and a lot of fellow TikTok users were very amused by the message.

“I swear these car companies build cars in advance then hide them from us,” one said.

“Mine says my software version was made in 1969, lol,” Another user added.

Whatever the problem, it’s good to see that people can see the funny side of error messages like this.
