There are several factors that contribute to the price of a watch but at the end of the day, it’s all down to two things: demand and heritage.

You wouldn’t expect a Patek Philippe to be cheap much in the same way you wouldn’t expect a cheap commuter car from Aston Martin or Ferrari.

But sometimes you can find phenomenally expensive watches, and the reason why is not so obvious at first glance.

Let’s take a closer look to find out why.

5. Leica L1 and L2

Leica, a company that most people associate with cameras, made headlines when it launched two timepieces back in February.

The L1 is a simple automatic watch and the L2 has a GMT function, allowing you to tell the time in two different time zones.

The watches are elegant and understated, but they’re also not cheap at all: $10,000 for the L1 and $14,000 for the L2.

4. Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Blue

Laurent Ferrier is a third-generation watchmaker and semi-professional racing driver who founded his own watch brand in 2009.

Collectors absolutely love and respect this brand.

This is one of the latest models, a beautiful automatic dress watch made from titanium, called Classic Origin Blue.

It’s elegant and tasteful, and pricey.

It costs $31,500 + taxes.

3. H Moser & Cie. Streamliner Perpetual Calendar

H Moser & Cie., most people simply call it ‘H Moser’, is an independent watch brand that’s been quickly rising through the ranks in recent years.

It has made some crazy stuff in the past, like the ‘invisible’ watch made from Vantablack.

The brand has a design language collectors appreciate.

And the watches are usually very expensive.

This, for example, is the Streamliner Perpetual Calendar, a unique steel watch with a fumé dial and an automatic movement with a perpetual calendar that takes leap years and moon phases into account.

Yours for $50,000.

2. Richard Mille RM 69

It sounds odd but there’s an entire category of watches called ‘erotic watches’, and they are exactly what the name suggests they are.

This particular Richard Mille, aptly called RM 69, has three rollers on the dial that display random combinations of words, forming erotic phrases.

That is crazy, but what’s even crazier is the price: $696,000

Drake, rapper and R&B artist, has one.

1. A. Lange & Söhne Grand Complication

A. Lange & Söhne, one of the most respected German watch brands, certainly deserves a top spot on the list with its Grand Complication.

It’s an engineering masterpiece from a well-known brand and yes, it’s made from pink gold.

However, even after factoring in all these elements, it is still shocking to find out the price tag of the watch.

Are you ready? Here we go: it’s $2.6 million!
