Elon Musk announces new female Twitter CEO

Elon Musk has hired a new female CEO for Twitter.

Musk made the announcement on Thursday, revealing the new hire would step into her new role in six weeks.

“My role will transition to being exec chair and CTO, overseeing product, software and sysops,” he said.

Potential candidates

Twitter’s product and trust leader Ella Irwin has been touted by insiders at the company as a potential candidate for the role.

Crucially, NBCU Chairman Linda Yaccarino was also named as a potential replacement and Musk ended up hiring her as the new Twitter CEO.

Musk said he would hire a new CEO on Thursday and made the announcement just one day later but that hasn’t stopped Twitter users from speculating.

Some responded in jest, joking that Musk would simply mask as a female to continue running the company.

Even one of YouTube’s largest creators, Mr Beast, asked if he could step in should the new CEO not work out.

Musk also serves as the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla.

Almost immediately following his announcement, Tesla shares jumped up two percent, signaling investors believed Musk would now have more time to dedicate to the company.

Since Musk took over Twitter on October 28, the platform has been embroiled in controversy.

For starters, he laid off thousands from the company’s workforce and then introduced a controversial subscription service for the blue tick verification.

Amidst the chaos, Musk took to Twitter to create a poll, giving users the power to decide his future in the company.

“Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll,” he said on December 19 last year.

The poll closed with 57 percent voting Yes, that he should step down as CEO.

True to his word, Musk said he would accept the result.

“I will resign as CEO as soon as I find someone foolish enough to take the job! After that, I wil ljust run the software and servers team,” he said.
