This is Sealand, a little ‘island’ in the North Sea just 12 km to the east of Suffolk in the UK.

Founded over 60 years ago, the ‘island’, officially known as the Principality of Sealand, only consists of a disused WWII facility that’s been repurposed to be lived on.

While it does not qualify as a ‘proper’ nation as no sovereign state recognizes it, it does have its own flag, its own motto and anthem, and even its own stamps.

It even has its own national soccer team, the SNFA (Sealand National Football Association).

It may not be the smallest nation on Earth – that title belongs to Vatican City – but it is indeed the smallest unrecognized country, measuring only 36 meters in length and 15 meters in width.
