Apple CarPlay is constantly being upgraded, and the latest iOS 26.4 update includes a few features people have been waiting on.
The update introduces a new ‘Chatbot’ category alongside a fresh ambient music widget.
And there’s a feature people are really eager to check out.
Now the wait is finally (almost) over.
Third-party AI chatbot apps and music
With the new iOS 26.4 update, Apple has introduced a new app category called ‘voice-based conversational apps’.
For the first time, this opens the door for third-party AI assistants to run natively on CarPlay.
Apple strictly enforces a voice-only interface, which means voice activation will be the only way to use these assistants to have back-and-forth conversations, brainstorm, or ask questions while driving.
Then there’s also the new Ambient Music widget to add to your CarPlay Dashboard stack, which allows you to curate soundscapes such as Chill, Productivity, Sleep, or Wellbeing.
We’re not sure how you’re supposed to be ‘productive’ or ‘sleep’ at the wheel, but hey.

The CarPlay feature everyone’s been waiting on
The ‘big one’ coming down the pipeline is native video support.
Apple has been promising in-car video playback forever, but the feature has been delayed a million times..
Now, the interface is (almost) ready to run, and it will be rolled out soon.
But there’s a catch.
For a combination of reasons related to passenger safety and corporate data control, the feature will have to be individually approved by each automaker.

The thing with Apple CarPlay is that you’ve got two entities – one being Apple and the other one being the automaker itself – competing for your attention, your data, and of course your money.
Apple, as we all know, runs a tight ship, and automakers don’t really like that.
The timeline is still TBD but, finally, it looks like it could be ready sooner rather than later.
