Apple unveils new foldable iPhone Duo as John Ternus officially takes over from Tim Cook

The new foldable Apple iPhone Duo is finally here.

Everyone assumed it would cost a fortune and, well, they were right.

But, to be fair, this is probably the company’s biggest moment since maybe the first iPhone or maybe the introduction of AirPods.

And the company had another trick up its sleeve.

John Ternus’ appointment signals what Apple wants to do

Apple certainly did it in style.

When the video livestream started, the tech giant took the first few minutes of the keynote to have Tim Cook pass the figurative baton to Ternus, and it was certainly nicely done.

When John Ternus was announced as the new CEO, replacing Tim Cook after 15 years, everyone thought the same thing.

The board of directors unanimously agreed Ternus was the right person for the job, and tech experts and creators realized this was a significant departure from the previous course for the company.

Under Cook’s tenure, Apple has become a giant with a massive market capitalization and an amazing profitability.

However, some critics pointed out that, with Cook, innovation was no longer a priority.

Unlike Cook, who has a corporate background in operational logistics and supply chain management, John Ternus is an engineer.

So maybe the idea is to make sure they can innovate again, like they used to.

Although there’s a very good reason why this particular event may not count.

Introducing the new iPhone Duo

This was the first Apple event hosted and presented by Ternus, replacing Tim Cook’s iconic ‘good morning’.

While Ternus’ mark may take a few months or years to become evident, we can already call this a history-making moment because Apple finally unveiled its first foldable phone.

Called the iPhone Duo, the phone is roughly the size of a passport (when folded) and it redefines the way we look at foldable phones.

Rather than gluing two iPhones one next to the other, which in Apple’s view is what its rivals did, they engineered a completely new way of blending two displays into a 17.6-inch screen.

Available in Star White and Night Sky, the iPhone Duo is eSim only worldwide.

The Duo will start at $1,999 with pre-orders opening on October 16 2026.

Apple Ultra will have to compete with three main book-style foldables, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and the OnePlus Open.

We also got the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max

As predicted, Apple has apparently decided to focus on iPhone Pros for its September events, and then unveil the ‘regular’ iPhones later.

The new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max features the new A20 Pro chip, the longest battery life in iPhone history and of course a better camera with Siri built in the camera, by the way.

It also comes with a new color-matched aluminum body, available in black, silver, a new color called Glacier, and burgundy.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 while 18 Pro Max $1,299, and there’s a 2 TB option, too.

Apple fans will be happy to learn that, even with Ternus, the ‘one more thing‘ tradition continues.

After unveiling the iPhone Ultra and the 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple also introduced the new AirPods 5, the main new feature is the new on-stem volume adjuster, and the fact that ANC is now standard across the entire lineup.

There are new upgrades for Apple Watch and Watch Ultra, but, ironically, this year’s one more thing was actually the thing everyone already knew was coming.
