The solar system is home to many planets, meteors, satellites… and one asteroid that’s said to be worth an eyewatering amount.
The Psyche asteroid was explored by a special spacecraft, and the reality may just blow your mind.
First discovered in the 19th century, the huge mass of space matter has posed many questions for astronomers and experts.
Now, though, it turns out that if NASA could make one thing happen, we might just all become billionaires.

Meet 16 Psyche – the asteroid that could make you rich
It was the astronomer Annibale de Gasparis who discovered this huge asteroid way back in 1852
Named after Psyche, the Greek goddess of the soul, who was married to Eros, AKA Roman Cupid, the god of love.
It’s also often named 16 Psyche, too, as it was the 16th ever asteroid to be discovered.

The asteroid is three times further away from the sun than we all are on Earth, and the shape is far from the same as our planet.
The asteroid is actually shaped almost like a potato, and according to NASA, if it were sliced horizontally at its equator, it would span a surface area of 64,000 square miles and would measure 144 miles long.

Until further research was carried out and data were recorded, it was believed that Psyche was mostly made of metal.
Newer data then showed that it could possibly be a mix of metal and silicate, which is often found in both sand and glass.

The quintillion-dollar space rock
Now, theoretically, this means that if NASA were to actually mine the materials on the asteroid and share the winnings, we could all be billionaires.
Worth around $10,000,00,000,000,000,000 – that’s 10 quintillion dollars US. If you’re wondering, just one quintillion is a billion billion.
So with a population of over 8.3 billion people on the planet, it could land us all with more than $1 billion dollars.
Each.
No, seriously, but it’s a big ‘if’ and highly unrealistic.
LadBible previously did the maths, but being able to mine the asteroid isn’t something we can currently do.
So, for now, it’s a nice idea, but one that is, unfortunately, a figment of a very vivid imagination.
NASA, however, launched a space probe, also called Psyche, in 2023 to ascertain if the asteroid is actually ‘the core of a planetesimal’, or in plain English, the beginning of a future planet.
And while reports have suggested that the elements contained within Psyche are almost priceless, these are all just estimates based on what might be there.
NASA’s Psyche spacecraft is still on track to reach its destination in 2029, so sit tight. There’s still time for it to make us all rich.
