Buying a 10-year-old Porsche Cayenne isn’t usually a casual decision.
It’s a luxury SUV with a serious badge, real running costs, and plenty of opinions attached to it.
But that’s the car this Australian automotive photographer chose when he went looking for a family daily that could also handle rougher roads.
After living with it for 12,430 miles, he’s now in a position to say whether that choice paid off.

Why this Porsche Cayenne Diesel made sense on paper
Peter Fritz, the creator behind the Life Behind Glass YouTube channel, wasn’t shopping for a show car.
He wanted a family SUV he could use every day, take his son to school in, and still point toward rough roads when the weekend called for it.
A Lexus LX was his dream pick, but the price felt ridiculous.
A Nissan Patrol tempted him, until he remembered how much fuel it drinks.

Then someone suggested a Cayenne – an idea he hadn’t seriously considered before.
After some research, it started to click.
He bought a 2015 Porsche Cayenne Diesel with roughly 31,000 miles (50,000km) on it, one owner, and a full service history, paying around $35,000 ($50,000 AUD).

This was a base model without air suspension, which he’d already learned can become a nightmare to fix as cars age.
Under the hood was the 3.0-liter V6 diesel used across the VW Group – an engine known for strong low-end pull, good fuel economy, and serious longevity if looked after.
On paper, it felt less like a risk and more like a calculated bet.

So does he regret buying it 12,430 miles later?
After driving for over 12,000 miles (20,000km), Peter’s answer is simple: no.
The Cayenne has been used properly.
School runs, city traffic, long freeway trips, and trips into the Victorian High Country.
Over all of it, it’s been completely reliable.

Fuel economy has been one of the biggest surprises.
On the highway, it can dip into the six-liters-per-100km range.
Even in traffic, it rarely creeps past nine.
Compared to petrol SUVs he’s owned before, it’s dramatically cheaper to run.
He did take preventative steps early, flushing the transfer case oil well before Porsche recommends and cleaning the DPF and EGR after years of short trips before he owned it.

Since then, it’s been smooth.
Because of all this, Peter doesn’t see the Cayenne as a regret at all.
Instead he sees it as proof that the right Porsche, bought the right way, can meet all your daily driving needs.
