Two years after the Oceangate disaster, another billionaire is heading to visit the Titanic wreck – paying $10M for the privilege.
The wreckage of the Titanic hasn’t been visited since the Oceangate disaster, in which five people perished.
The idea of meeting your maker in a submersible deep in the ocean should probably give everyone pause.
But one billionaire still wants to head down there, and he’s investing a lot of money into the effort.

Two years after the Oceangate disaster, another billionaire wants to visit the Titanic
It may have sunk 113 years ago, but the Titanic is still a great topic of interest today.
The vessel lies 12,500 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean and is a big draw for marine explorers.
And if those marine explorers happen to have a lot of disposable income to play around with, all the better.

Famously, the last attempt to see the wreckage of the Titanic didn’t go well – as all five people onboard the OceanGate Titan submarine lost their lives.
So you might think that it’d put off others from trying.
But for Patrick Lahey, the CEO of Triton Submarines, it’s still a worthwhile expedition.
“Besides it being a wreck of historical significance, the fact that it lies at such great depth makes it fascinating to visit,” Lahey told The New York Post.
Lahey is in the middle of building a submersible that could handle the journey down to the Titanic.
Likening it to people climbing Mount Everest, he maintained that the Titanic was ripe for exploration.

Prior to Lahey speaking to The Post, an anonymous source had told the paper that a billionaire would be spending $10 million to get down there.
“He’ll want to make an announcement that he is the first person to go to the Titanic since the tragedy,” the source said.
Triton’s planned submarine is expected to cost $20 million and is apparently going to be finished by next year.
Maybe it’ll be a literal race to the bottom, as India was reportedly developing a submarine back in 2023 for this intended purpose.

The ill-fated ship is a constant source of fascination
Even after all of this time, there’s still a lot to talk about when it comes to the Titanic.
Whether it’s comparing it to the world’s biggest cruise ships or analyzing items left on passengers, there’s a lot to go over.
