What if you were a billionaire and got pulled over while cruising in your C8 Corvette on an island that you actually own?

Well, that’s exactly what once happened to Larry Ellison, who owns a Hawaiian island.

The billionaire was rushing home in his Corvette and ran past a stop sign while speeding, for which he was pulled over and cited.

Larry Ellison and his private island

Something like this may seem quite odd, but the law can get you even on the land you own.

The incident happened last year, and there’s even body cam footage of the cop involved.

For context, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is among the top 10 richest people in the world.

He must have a sizeable car collection, but he was driving his orange C8 Corvette that day.

Now, the Corvette is certainly a great ride for speeding, but not so much on public roads.

You shouldn’t speed in any car on public roads, of course.

The tech mogul also happens to own 98% of the island of Lanai, which is the jurisdiction of the Maui Police Department.

On a fine evening in October of last year, Ellison was reportedly rushing home and drove past a stop sign while above the speed limit.

The next thing he knew was that he was getting pulled over.

Further, the billionaire had a polite conversation with the cop, who asked for his license and documentation.

Ellison didn’t have his license on him, so the officer cited him.

It’s no big deal for a billionaire to wave something like a citation off, but it makes for an awkward situation.

Since Ellison doesn’t completely own the island, the leftover areas are public roads.

That’s also the reason why the local police department patrols there.

If he had 100% ownership, this awkward situation would never have happened.
