Owner of $6M Chiron Pur Sport that Mat Armstrong rebuilt finally meets Bugatti CEO Mate Rimac and he wasn't afraid to share his thoughts

The owner of the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport rebuilt by Mat Armstrong has finally managed to meet Mate Rimac in person in California, and the CEO was quick to give his thoughts on the supercar.

As we know, Rimac disowned the operation.

While he was actually pretty nice about it, he did have a couple of questions about Armstrong’s project.

Rimac also revealed if he’d ever get in the rebuilt Chiron Pur Sport himself.

A little recap of what happened to this Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport

A while back, Mat Armstrong bought a wrecked Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport and began rebuilding it pretty much as a DIY project.

Some things were 3D-printed and other components where sources from unusual places – like airbags from an Audi.

That’s because Bugatti blacklisted the VIN and essentially made it pretty much impossible for Armstrong to get original components.

Mate Rimac himself said the whole idea was crazy.

In short, Rimac’s view was simple: the car may be drivable again, but there’s no way to guarantee the structural integrity of the vehicle in the long run.

Now the car’s ready, it’s been delivered to the owner, YouTuber Alex G Was Here, and Alex actually managed to meet Rimac in person in California.

And what Rimac had to say was both flattering and challenging at the same time.

If you look at the form, Mate Rimac was actually pretty nice about it.

If you look at the substance, his position is virtually unchanged, apart from the fact he’s at least not totally refusing to help now.

“If you give it back to us, we’ll fix it at a reasonable price,” he told Alex when he approached him at Monterey Car Week, in California.

However, the other things he said exposed the problem.

Initially, Mate Rimac was sort of light-hearted.

“You said you can 3D-print everything, right? The windshield, the gearbox,” he teased Alex with a smile on his face.

Then, he got a bit serious when Alex asked him if the car could ever achieve its theoretical top speed again.

“It depends on the size of your balls,” he said.

“Everything is possible. People do all kinds of stuff. I won’t do it. If you want to try to do it in that car,” he said.

He also get a bit more technical to highlight the scale of the problem.

“So, explain me the physics of a spoiler being attached to another panel on the rear. The spoiler creates downforce. Downforce pushes down. [It] needs to go somewhere and… it just goes to panel,” he said.

Then he went further.

“I mean, you were driving the car without water in the engine. You were sliding it without the rear frame. You have still a cracked monocoque [chassis]. Like, I mean it’s very ‘updated’,” he said with a laugh.

All in all, the result was bittersweet.

Mate Rimac still thought fixing the car was a bad idea.

But he at least sort of offered to help.

That’s progress.
