Chinese EV manufacturer BYD just unveiled a next-gen charging platform that could blow every other EV charger out of the water.

We’re talking 1,000kW (kilowatts) peak charging speeds — supposedly enough to charge an EV in just five minutes.

That’s basically the same time it takes to fuel up a combustion vehicle, and it’s over twice as fast as Tesla’s current 500kW superchargers.

The announcement came straight from BYD HQ in Shenzhen, live-streamed with founder Wang Chuanfu revealing the marque’s next technological leap.

An EV charging breakthrough

The new BYD Super e-Platform can deliver up to 400km (249 miles) of driving range in that five-minute charge window — a game-changer for daily drivers and road-trippers alike.

BYD’s new Han L sedan and Tang L SUV will be the first to get the ultra-fast charging system, with the cars priced at roughly $37,350 and $38,700, respectively.

These two models could redefine what convenience means in the EV world.

“In order to completely solve our users’ charging anxiety, we have been pursuing a goal to make the charging time of electric vehicles as short as the refueling time of petrol vehicles,” Wang said, according to The Guardian.

To support all this power, the carmaker also announced a massive rollout of 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China.

This is a big pivot for the company, which previously relied on third-party or competitor-run stations as opposed to Tesla’s approach of first-party infrastructure.

The EV giant has yet to confirm the timeline of when it will begin and aim to complete this major rollout.

However, given the electrical capacity required to reach 1000kw peak charging speeds, it’s likely to be a massive undertaking that surpasses regular charger installation.

While buyers of the new Han L and Tang L might be wondering whether they can take full advantage of the Super e-Platform’s charging capabilities without beefed-up charging stations, BYD has already thought of how to counter this challenge.

The new cars will include two charging ports for simultaneous fast charging.

BYD vs Tesla: EV charging wars

The market responded fast to the announcement.

BYD’s stock jumped 4.1 percent after the news dropped, hitting a new record high on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

On the other side of the all-electric manufacturer fence, Tesla is struggling with a 44 percent dip in stock in 2025.

Now BYD’s charging breakthrough just added more heat to the fire, having doubled Tesla’s fastest Superchargers in one fell swoop.

If BYD can actually deliver five-minute charging on a large scale, this could flip the entire industry on its head.

Slow charging has been one of the big drawbacks for consumers considering making the switch to an all-electric.

Now, that reason might be gone.

Tesla might be licking their wounds over this massive technical advancement right now.

The carmaker’s other rivals, including Li Auto, and Nio may look to follow suit – and EV owners look to be the winners in this competition between giants.
