BYD has set its sights on selling up to 1.5 million vehicles overseas in 2026, as the Chinese carmaker goes from strength to strength.
The company was founded in 2003 and initially entered the automotive market with a petrol-engine car in 2005.
In 2008, it introduced its first hybrid vehicle, the F3DM, followed by the all-electric e6 in 2009.
However, it’s only been in recent years that the company has experienced substantial sales growth, and earlier this year experienced a ‘watershed’ moment when it overtook Tesla in sales in Europe.

BYD has set itself an ambitious sales goal for 2026
Alongside that, recent figures showed it outsold Tesla sevenfold in the UK last month.
As the company continues to enjoy skyrocketing sales, BYD announced it was planning to open a new production facility in China that will be bigger than the whole of San Francisco.

The marque has also shared plans to introduce its entire range into the European market by 2028.
Now, BYD has got its sights set on having a record-breaking year of overseas sales.
The company is expected to sell between 900,000 and one million vehicles outside of China this year, but is hoping for bigger things in 2026.
According to a report from Reuters, BYD is aiming for sales of between 1.5 and 1.6 million next year.
The report goes on to say that the growth will be ‘driven by new model launches’.
BYD’s overseas sales are spread across several different regions, including Europe and North America.
As yet, the Chinese carmaker hasn’t revealed its overall sales goal for next year but it’s clear that it has big things planned.
The company recently unveiled its first foreign-market EV
With its mind seemingly fixed on global dominance, BYD recently unveiled its first foreign-market EV.
The Racco EV is the first kei car from a non-Japanese carmaker and will go on sale exclusively in Japan from the middle of next year.

The pint-sized vehicle sports a boxy shape and rides on 14-inch wheels.
As it’s a kei car, its size and power are restricted, with its electric powertrain capped at just 63 horsepower.
Other specs have been kept under wraps for now, but more will be revealed ahead of its official launch into the Japanese market next year.
