After conquering Europe, BYD is now completely dominating the electric vehicle space in Australia, outselling Tesla 10-to-1, following one of the biggest surges the car industry has ever seen.

Chinese EVs have seen rapid growth throughout 2025, with the likes of BYD, Xiaomi, and Chery all blossoming.

Thanks to its cheaper and ‘more affordable’ electric vehicles, the Chinese cars have undercut those made in the West, and premium brands like Tesla have felt the full force of this shift.

So much so that in the first month of this year, Australian drivers have flocked to BYD, leaving Tesla cars waving their highly-priced stickers at uninterested shoppers.

BYD continues its dominance over Tesla with massive

Wow, what a year it has been for BYD. In 2025 alone, the company erupted in the UK, increasing sales by a colossal 880 percent.

Shipping 2.26 million vehicles in 2025, mainly thanks to its flagship Sealion and Atto 2 models, the Chinese brand overtook Tesla as the biggest EV company in the world.

Now, this same pattern has repeated itself in Australia, after studies found that the sales of the brand’s electric cars have increased 641 percent year-on-year when comparing January’s figures.

Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries revealed that 5,001 BYD vehicles were sold in January, which is 10 times more than Tesla, with 501.

Despite its efforts to become more affordable, Tesla’s sales declined 32 percent in comparison to January 2025.

BYD is now the biggest EV brand in Australia and the 6th-highest-selling carmaker in the country.

Tesla’s decline down under has landed them 26th in the sales charts, even falling behind other Chinese EV brands GWM (7th), Chery (9th), and MG (10th).

Is it game over for Tesla if Chinese EVs come to America?

In Tesla’s defence, its fleet has been around for a number of years already and has dominated the sales space for half a decade. Most drivers who want a Tesla have a Tesla.

But that doesn’t mean that these aren’t worrying times for the American brand, as it’s clear that the new models simply can’t compete with the Chinese alternatives.

So far, attempts to bring BYD cars to the US have been thwarted with huge tariffs from the current government, but there’s an overwhelming feeling that the industry can’t fend off the competition forever.

Already, the brand is making foreign-market vehicles, such as the Japan-only city car, as it looks to produce a set of wheels for every occasion.

Arguably, the most important effect of BYD’s dominance is the response from European carmakers, who also don’t want to fall further behind.

If EV manufacturers in Europe, like Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Citroen, Peugeot, and Volkswagen, continue to lower the price of their electric cars, it’s only a matter of time before they begin to become popular in the United States, too.

For Tesla, though, it looks like it could be admitting defeat and putting the car industry on the back burner, as it sunset two popular models earlier this year in favor of new robotics labs.
