Incredible images show herd of camels crossing highway in Oman causing traffic chaos

Oman is an oil-rich country where plenty of people own and drive valuable cars.

But it is also a country where an equally large number of residents ‘drive’ camels.

On this occasion, the camels outnumbered the cars and caused quite the stir while crossing a highway.

The pictures – shared by AutoJosh.com – were taken near Salalah in the green Dhofar region of Oman, about 600 miles south of the capital Muscat.

A herd of camels crossed the highway, causing traffic chaos as motorists had to stop and wait for the animals to cross safely.

It must have been a weird but also wonderful sight for people in the cars.

Camels vs supercars

Oman is one of those places where the camel-to-car ratio, so to speak, is probably quite impressive.

According to Muscat Daily, nearly 250,000 camels live in Oman, so this means that seeing on your to work is probably a common sight, especially outside of the capital and in rural areas.

For reference, the Sultanate is also home to at 1.6 million registered vehicles and 4.5 million people.

Precisely because camels are so common, camel-related road accidents are a problem, and in order to reduce them, the police are telling owners to fit luminous straps onto the backs of their animals when they are outside.

The supercar scene in Oman

Oman is an oil-rich country, but it isn’t as flashy as other neighboring countries when it comes to the supercar scene.

There aren’t Cybertruck police cars, or McLaren police cars, and when ultra-rich collectors fly their cars to Europe to drive them in the summer, they’re usually from Saudi Arabia or Qatar or the UAE, but not Oman.

So it’s a wealthy country, but they clearly love their camels.

Apart from when they cause mayhem on the highway, that is.
