Curious about how the math would work out, a Tesla driver calculated their EV savings and shared the surprising figures with fellow owners online.
The post quickly caught attention on Reddit, where electric vehicle owners often swap tips, data, and personal experiences.
Curious about how much money others were saving, the driver asked fellow users to share their numbers.
And based on the response, it seems like driving an EV has many benefits.

The Tesla driver charges at home most of the time
The discussion began on the popular r/TeslaLounge subreddit, where the Tesla driver posted a screenshot from a tracking app showing their charging costs and estimated gasoline savings for the year.

According to the data, the owner spent CA$832 (about $608 USD) on electricity in 2025.
Over the same period, the app estimated they avoided CA$1,828 (about $1,336 USD) in gasoline expenses.
In other words, the numbers suggested that running a traditional ICE vehicle would have cost more than three times as much in fuel alone.
The Tesla owner also revealed that around 85 percent of their charging happened at home, which is one of the biggest factors behind the savings.
Home charging is widely considered the most cost-effective way to operate an electric vehicle.
Electricity rates are typically lower than public charging prices, and far cheaper than gasoline on a per-mile basis in many regions.
Overnight charging can also take advantage of off-peak electricity pricing in some areas, lowering costs even further.
Many EV owners say this combination of lower energy prices and convenient charging is one of the biggest advantages of going electric.

Maintenance costs can also be lower, because electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than traditional gasoline-powered cars.
As EVs start to become the ‘new normal’, repair costs are also starting to dip even further.

It’s cheaper even when you only charge at public chargers
The Reddit thread quickly filled with other drivers sharing their own EV savings, and some of them were even more dramatic.
One commenter claimed their costs were almost nonexistent thanks to Tesla’s free Supercharging program.

While not every EV owner will see savings quite that extreme, the broader trend is clear.
In many cases, electric vehicle drivers spend significantly less on energy compared to gas-powered vehicles, especially when they charge primarily at home.
However, even if you only have access to public chargers, a study showed that it’s still cheaper than paying for gas.
Whether you personally like EVs or not, the numbers don’t lie: driving an EV saves you money.
