Chevrolet Colorado makes its mark

For those of you who aren’t aware, the Chevrolet Colorado made its debut in 2004.

It was first introduced as a smaller, mid-range option in the Chevrolet lineup.

And it’s been accepted everywhere as a very solid, all-around vehicle.

However, it has always been felt that the Colorado was lacking an extra something.

It has always fallen a bit short compared to more rugged, capable off-road beasts.

But that is where the ingenious hack at the heart of today’s story kicks in.

Back in the mid-2000s, another truck was built on a similar platform to the Chevy – the GMC Canyon.

That SUV just happens to be the Hummer H3.

The Hummer H3 sort of fell into the shadows of the range, but it was still a Hummer.

Owners notice similarities with H3 Hummer

This meant that, despite the two trucks sharing DNA, the Hummer H3 had much greater off-road capabilities.

Owners were quick to notice the similarities, and they decided to get to work.

It is around this time that the concept of the H3 swap project was born.

The benefit of the Hummer H3 is that it came with a much wider stance and greater travel.

This was because the H3 came with longer upper and lower control arms.

Forum posters soon got the idea to start swapping the longer and lower control arms from the H3 onto the Colorado.

By doing this, the Colorado would get far greater off-road capabilities.

But the swapping fun didn’t stop there – in fact, it produced another massive upgrade.

Both the Colorado and the Canyon were notorious for having captive brakes.

This meant having to yank off the hub if you needed to change rotors.

Swapping this out for the H3 suspension would provide non-captive brakes and, therefore, much easier maintenance.

And the best part of it all was the cost.

Because of the availability/unpopularity of the H3 Hummer, these parts were easy to find in junkyards.

For a few hundred dollars, Colorado/Canyon owners could massively upgrade their 4x4s.

So, if you happen to own a first-generation Chevrolet Colorado or GMC Canyon – visit your local junkyard.

Because you could massively upgrade your truck for a fraction of the price.
