China has just opened the tallest bridge in the world, and it’s so much more than just a two-hour time saver.
Bridges aren’t a new phenomenon, but China has just upped the game significantly.
In a bid to save two hours detouring around the Huajiang Canyon, this magnificent structure has now been erected to join both sides.
But it’s not just tarmac and metal, and standing tall as the tallest bridge in the world, it even features a waterfall fountain, restaurants, and a glass sightseeing walkway.

China opens the tallest bridge in the world over Huajiang Canyon
There are a number of iconic crossings that have revolutionized travel. Just think of the San Francisco bridge, which is one of the most profitable in the world.
Then there is the Louisiana Pontchartrain Causeway, serving as the longest man-made overpass in the world.
But after some intense months of construction, China has now opened the Huajiang Canyon Bridge, which dwarfs anything you’ve ever seen.
Standing at 625 metres above the bottom of the canyon gorge, it has easily taken the claim of the tallest bridge in the world.
But there’s more to it.

Construction of this behemoth crossing took just three years, but it involved cutting a mountain in half.
The overpass opened on September 28 after a rigorous final wave of weight testing and has already become a tourist attraction.
Underneath the road is a wealth of activities and hotspots, including a specialty coffeehouse, extreme sports centres for bungee jumping and paragliding, and a skywalk that allows you to see directly into the gorge below.
Building access to more areas than ever before
This new opening in China is just one of many new bypasses that are setting records.
The recently opened Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link broke 10 world records, including being the most expensive bridge ever – it cost $4.8 billion – and saving the most time in a single crossing.

Over in Italy, another bridge is connecting locals to more of the country as the world’s largest suspension bridge is being built to open up travel between Sicily and Sardinia, pictured above.
