Man counts 1,000 cars at one of the busiest intersections in China's richest city to see which brand rules them all

This man set up his camera at one of the busiest intersections in China’s richest city to count 1,000 cars – and now he knows which brand is most popular on the streets.

YouTube channel Immersive China stood at Jing’an Temple in Shanghai, China’s richest city, and counted cars.

It certainly could be argued that China has the world’s most diverse car market.

But which brands come out on top?

Which brands are dominating on this intersection in China’s richest city?

With 1,000 cars counted, there was a whole range of diversity when it came to brands and the countries from which they originated.

Unsurprisingly, China was the top dog with 499 of the represented vehicles coming from there.

In a slightly distant second was Germany at 191, and then the US was third with 171.

Japan was represented by 96 cars and came in fourth.

The rest of the list was as follows – UK at 14, Sweden at 11, Italy at 8, France at 4, Czechia at 4, and South Korea at 2.

Quite a wide range, but which brands were represented under these nations?

All in all, 83 brands were spotted, which is mind-boggling.

Do you think you could think of that many car brands? If so, you should probably be on Top Gear.

At any rate, these brands came out in the top 20:

  1. Roewe (171)
  2. BYD (75)
  3. Buick (74)
  4. Tesla (65)
  5. Volkswagen (62)
  6. Mercedes (54)
  7. Toyota (50)
  8. BMW (41)
  9. Aion (33)
  10. Rising Auto (27)
  11. Sunwin (26)
  12. Nio (21)
  13. Audi (19)
  14. Geely (17)
  15. Maxus (16)
  16. Porsche (14)
  17. Cadillac (13)
  18. Lexus (13)
  19. Honda (12)
  20. Volvo (11)

Roewe, a Chinese brand, is well represented among taxis, which goes some way to explaining its dominance in the ranking.

And it’s no surprise that BYD came in second place.

Let’s face it, we’ve been hearing a ton about that brand for quite some time now, particularly with regards to their dominance in foreign markets – whether it’s the UK, Europe, or Australia.

What does this video tell us about cars in China?

Evidently, this video shows us that the car market in China is booming – and its native brands are well represented.

China’s government takes a keen interest in its auto industry, which we know for sure.

That’s not just conjecture on our part; the government releases a list of cars of the future every month.

With targets for EV domination and loopholes to meet said targets, the government is nothing but ambitious.
