This team of hands-on mechanics ripped apart three old bangers and welded them back together again in mesmerizing fashion to create a custom Bugatti, and now they’ve been doing the adding up.

‘Do it yourself’ is the money-saving method all laborers live and die by.

But do you really save money in the car industry with that attitude?

Well, the YouTube team behind ‘Axes: Garage’ has opened up about the finances behind their custom Bugatti project, including the costs of the old cars that they chopped up.

How much does it cost to build a custom Bugatti?

This is the ‘Volgatti‘, a custom Bugatti and a 1950s Volga crossover, using parts from a scrapyard Mitsubishi Eclipse and BMW 6 Series duo.

It’s a project three years in the making, which saw the garage redesign the entire bodywork of the vintage car to give it the fresh face of a French Bugatti.

But after finishing the mashup car, the team has broken down how much they spent.

In total, the custom Bugatti cost them around $107,000 to make.

The majority of the costs were split four ways, with $38,000 going on labor, $32,000 being spent on fresh parts and materials, $18k splashed on performance upgrades, and $11,000 dropped on the three donor vehicles.

Is it better value than the real deal?

Typically, Bugattis aren’t cheap.

There are methods of getting one of the French supercars on a budget, but they’re not foolproof.

This ‘Bugatti’ bought for under $30,000 ended up as a complete dud, while even the old classics that need complete overhauls aren’t a wise venture despite a $5,000 price tag.

Officially, you can also get a brand-new car from the Molsheim factory for $32,000, but it’s a tight squeeze.

So, unless you have $1.9 million for a Veyron, this custom Bugatti method might just be the golden ticket.

Axes: Garage has taken the Volgatti on the road, but there’s still much more that they want to do with their own Frankenstein’s Monster.
