A man who has daily driven a Ferrari F40 supercar for 22 years has explained how he bought it outright in cash, before he even owned a house.
The fact that any Ferrari F40 has been a daily driver, let alone for over 20 years, is simply extraordinary.
YouTuber Supercar Driver recently spoke to its owner, Charles, about how he got a hold of the car and why he bought it.
Charles also revealed that he actually bought the supercar after an unexpected payout, before he even owned his own house.
How Charles bought the Ferrari F40
Charles discussed how he had bought the Ferrari F40 in 2004, at a time when it didn’t cost seven figures like it does today.
In 2004, the car wasn’t as revered, and it cost him £163,000, roughly $228,800.
The reason he was able to afford the car was that he had an unexpected dividend payout that had landed right in his bank account.
“I got a dividend from the company, and I never knew we were going to get dividends,” said Charles.
“My dividend was £163,000, and that was all the money I had.”
That really was every penny that Charles had in his account.
He went to see it and a Ferrari 288 GTO, but he ended up choosing the F40.
“This is the more exciting car, and I was a young lad, and I wanted a more exciting car,” added Charles.
The Ferrari F40 was the poster car of the time
Charles explained why he bought this particular car in the first place.
“It was the poster car, the world’s fastest car, the first one to hit 200mph,” he said.
Incredibly, there was a time when Charles owned two examples of the F40.
A year later, another dividend enabled him to buy a red one, and he kept both for roughly eight years.
In the end, Charles sold the red one for a massive £475,000 ($643,810), which more than covered what he paid for the yellow one.
With that financial cushion, Charles felt happy having the supercar daily driven, rather than treating it as an investment.
Charles actually competed successfully in racing, winning three national championships.
That allowed him to drive the F40 on race tracks, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Charles wasn’t afraid to upgrade his F40
You could argue that the reliability and how much this F40 has been used actually add to its value.
Over the years, Charles has also given it a few upgrades.
This F40 now has LM and GTE-style upgrades, inspired by race versions of the car developed by Michelotto.
Charles also gave the car a more aggressive rear wing, a bigger diffuser, and he sharpened the chassis up for a better response in the corners.
Charles also added a discreet boot controller to bump up its power.
His 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged Tipo V8 now makes roughly 550hp.
This daily driven example really is a very special Ferrari F40.
