Lewis Hamilton has finally got his hands on the Ferrari F40 he has dreamed about since childhood, but this wasn’t just any example of the legendary supercar – it was covered in dust in garage for years.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion discovered the car after it had spent more than 30 years sitting in a garage, and he knew immediately that he had to bring it home.

Instead of simply giving it a clean and putting the key in the ignition, Hamilton sent the forgotten Ferrari back to Maranello, where Ferrari’s engineers and mechanics spent weeks bringing it back to life.

Now, the incredible transformation has been revealed, and it looks like this F40 has received exactly the kind of treatment you would expect for Hamilton’s dream car.

The Ferrari F40 supercar has always held a special place in racecar driver Lewis Hamilton’s heart, and his latest Instagram post makes just how much the car means to him very clear.

“My very own F40. This is the car of my dreams and has been for as long as I can remember,” Hamilton wrote.

He said: “As a kid I dreamt of having one. When I joined Ferrari last year I made sure to have one with me on my first day at Maranello. That’s how much it means to me.

“These cars are works of art and incredibly rare, so when I found this one, covered in dust after being sat in a garage for over thirty years, I knew I had to bring her home.

“First to Maranello, where the master engineers and mechanics at the factory worked for weeks to bring her back to life. Massive thank you to everyone who had a hand in this project.

“This has truly been a dream come true. I can’t wait to share more with you all. Stay tuned.”

In fact, when Hamilton officially joined Ferrari in 2025, he made sure an F40 was waiting for him on his first day at Maranello.

The image of the F1 superstar standing alongside the iconic red supercar quickly became one of the defining photos of his arrival at the Italian team.

That makes his latest discovery even more fitting.

Rather than being put off by its neglected condition, he saw an opportunity to rescue one of Ferrari’s most famous creations.

The F40 was produced from the late 1980s and remains one of Ferrari’s most revered road cars.

It was powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 478 hp, while its lightweight construction helped it reach a top speed of 324 km/h (201 mph).

It was also the final Ferrari road car personally approved by Enzo Ferrari, making it even more significant to collectors and Hamilton clearly wasn’t interested in turning his dream car into just another garage ornament.

The Ferrari F40 was brought back to life in exceptional style

The F40 was handed over to Ferrari’s own engineers and mechanics, who spent weeks working on the car to bring it back to life.

Photos shared by Hamilton show just how extensive the work was, with the F40 stripped back during the restoration and its engine removed as the team worked on the decades-old machine.

The timing is particularly interesting because Hamilton had previously revealed that he had sold his entire road-car collection in 2025, saying he was more interested in collecting art.

But when asked what car could tempt him back into ownership, there was one obvious answer: the F40, and now, he has one.

And it isn’t simply a pristine example bought from a showroom or collector.

Hamilton’s F40 has a story of its own, having spent more than three decades hidden away before eventually finding its way to one of the world’s most famous Ferrari drivers.

There is also something particularly satisfying about the fact that its revival took place at Maranello, with Ferrari’s own specialists working to return it to the road.
