At CES 2025, Dolby has announced plans to ramp up in-car entertainment, which will basically turn cars into mobile home theaters.

The tech company has already introduced its Dolby Atmos surround sound system to several car manufacturers – and now it looks to go one step further.

As well as rolling out the sound system to even more carmakers, the company announced Dolby Vision for cars.

It says the technology will allow for a more immersive experience while watching entertainment in your car.

In-car infotainment and entertainment systems have come a long way in recent years.

Last year, Volkswagen unveiled a trio of screens inside the Passat Pro, including an 11.6 inch touchscreen for the front passenger to enjoy. The Lamborghini Temerario has a similar set up.

Now, in a bid to make those entertainment systems even more entertaining, Dolby has announced its plans to bring Dolby Vision to cars.

“Dolby Vision unlocks life-like picture that brings out more colors, true blacks, brighter brights, and incredible detail from your favorite movies, streaming series, games, and live sports content,” the company said in a statement after its unveiling at CES 2025.

To get the project up and running, it has partnered with Samsung Display to bring the cutting-edge visuals to as many vehicles as possible.

CES 2025 was also a chance to showcase the very first vehicle designed to support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos: the Li Auto’s Li MEGA.

The company isn’t just working on boosting visuals

Alongside its new planned visual boost, the company used CES 2025 to announce that it has doubled the number of carmakers supporting Dolby Atmos bringing it to more vehicles than ever before.

Amongst the marques signed up to support the tech are Cadillac, Li Auto, Mercedes-Benz, Polestar, Rivian, and Volvo Cars.

These advancements are helping to push the ‘new frontier’ of in-car entertainment, the company says.

So rather than passengers having to make do with staring at their phone during longer journeys, they can happily sit back and enjoy a movie, audiobook, podcast or live sporting event – sounds pretty cool, right?

“Dolby innovations are at the heart of our most cherished entertainment, enriching how we enjoy our favorite movies, music, and more on all our favorite devices. And there is no better place to unlock this highest form of entertainment than your car,” said John Couling, Senior Vice President of Entertainment, Dolby Laboratories.

“We are thrilled with the progress we’ve made over the past year in bringing Dolby Atmos to even more vehicles.

“At CES, we are showcasing this exciting momentum as well as previewing the next frontier of immersive in-car entertainment that Dolby Vision enables.”

Looks like long road trips could be about to get a lot more interesting.
