A UK start-up Nyobolt has developed an electric car battery that can charge from 10% to 80% in four minutes and 37 seconds.

They installed the battery on a specially built concept EV sports car.

The live demonstration took place on a test track in Bedford.

Electric car battery that charges in less than five minutes

The vehicle fitted with the Nyobolt’s electric car battery was tested over two days.

The car achieved a range of 120 miles after just four minutes of charging.

However, a Tesla charged to 80% would have a range of up to 200 miles.

An existing Tesla supercharger can also charge a car battery to 80% in 15-20 minutes, depending on the model.

Car industry adapting to an EV-focused future

The new electric car battery is part of an industry-wide effort to get EVs charging more quickly.

Companies are also working on increasing the range of their EV cars to eliminate ‘range anxiety’ in customers.

Earlier this year, Mercedes showcased a concept EV car that traveled more than twice the distance of a typical electric car. It covered four countries on a single battery charge.

Some students from the Technical University of Munich also created an EV that goes 1,600 miles on just one charge.

What’s even more impressive is that Nyobolt’s electric car battery could charge from 0% to 100% in just six minutes.

Dr Sai Shivareddy, co-founder of Nyobolt described the demo as “a big milestone for electrification.”

He joked that his own car was still charging, which he plugged in when he arrived at the test site earlier.

Nyobolt’s electric car battery requires a powerful 350kW DC superfast charger.

Although it is publicly available in some countries, it is not widespread.

However, it is quite great news for all EV lovers out there.
