This YouTuber found a completely abandoned private island in the middle of nowhere in the Midwest.

Apparently, the structure on the forested lake was found years ago via Google Earth, but it took ages to figure out how to get there safely.

The creator, Stringer media, hasn’t actually mentioned where it is, apart from the fact he said it is roughly ‘nine hours’ from any major city.

And what’s truly said is that everything was left behind.

It looks like somebody left in a rush

There was no public parking or boat launch, so the YouTuber and his team hid their cars on an abandoned lot nearby and used an inflatable raft to get there.

When they got there, they realized the owners probably left in a rush.

Some cabins had collapsed or been vandalized, and someone had clearly visited since because a lot of items had been moved and doors had been broken.

But the main house was a near time capsule because everything was left behind.

And it tells you exactly when: the dining table, the fireplace and couches, CRT TVs, kids’ books, clothes, food and spices in the fridge.

Everything has ‘2000s’ written all over it.

Literally, in some cases, as they even found a 2008 Olympics item and a 2008 Mercedes-Benz magazine.

Here’s a potential explanation as to why the private island was abandoned

The private island began as a retreat for high-ranking employees of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance in the 1970s.

Then, an unnamed person related to the company inherited the island in the 1980s, before selling it on to a multi-person partnership.

But things went south in 2008.

With a dissolved partnership, any sale would need every member tracked down and heavy fees paid.

No one knows where this island is

The creator deliberately kept the location secret and only mentioned that it’s somewhere remote in the Midwest, on a forested lake with sandy soil and pines, about ‘9 hours’ from any major city.

That’s a little unrealistic in the Midwest – even from the most remote points in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula or Northern Minnesota, a major metropolitan area (like Minneapolis, Chicago, or Milwaukee) is typically within a 5- to 7-hour drive – but that’s beside the point.

There’s no town, county, or even state given, and saying it’s ‘in the Midwest’ also keeps it very generic by design.

The Midwest, which by the way it is actually located sort of mid-east, comprises 12 states and around 820,000 square miles.

These ‘I found an abandoned property’ videos are catchy, but the key word is property.

there is no way to determine if a registered deed exists, as physical neglect does not mean legal ownership has ceased.

Even if it’s abandoned.
