The first-ever Tesla Robotaxi, which is actually just a driverless Tesla Model Y, was spotted in Austin, Texas, just a few days ahead of the official Robotaxi launch date.

If everything goes to plan, Robotaxis should be available very soon in Texas.

And the goal is to expand to other cities and states after Austin.

There’s a minor catch, though.

The first Tesla Robotaxi, which is actually just a Tesla Model Y with no one at the wheel, was just spotted in Austin, Texas.

This is the biggest catch so far. Because we still have no idea when the ‘real’ Robotaxi, as in Cybercab, will actually be available.

For now, this is what we’re getting.

After going back and forth for months, Tesla has tentatively confirmed June 22nd as the official Robotaxi launch date.

Tesla is going to be Beta testing the Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, with around ’10-12 vehicles at first.’

The company will make sure each vehicle is fully controllable remotely, in case human override is needed, especially during the first phase of testing.

The Tesla Model Y spotted in Texas looks exactly like any other Model Y, with two key differences.

One, it doesn’t have a driver behind the wheel. And two, it has a stylish, graffiti-like decal on the side that reads ‘Robotaxi’.

Tesla is currently trailing behind Waymo, which is already available in several cities, when it comes to its autonomous ride-hailing service.

But, to be fair, we should point out that the Waymo vs Tesla debate is not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison.

Waymo started out as an Uber-style service without drivers. Tesla, though, is also an energy company, as well as, of course, an automaker.

Either way, Tesla seems determined to catch up.

And the company proved this by spearheading the unveiling of two robotaxis, something they did at the expense of the yet again delayed Roadster.
