Two Tennessee strangers who own Ford F-250 trucks fixed a 20-year issue after meeting in parking lot and swapping mismatched tailgates

Sometimes the easiest solution to a car problem is already sitting right in front of you – or, in the case of two Tennessee strangers who both own a Ford F-250, driving straight past you.

That was exactly what happened when Ford F-250 owner Dylan Meador spotted a truck that looked strangely familiar.

His 2001 F-250 had spent years wearing a tailgate in the wrong color, but another truck nearby had the exact opposite problem.

What happened next turned a completely ordinary shopping trip into one of the most satisfying stories I have ever read.

The two Ford trucks had the exact opposite tailgates

Dylan Meador had recently bought a 2001 Ford F-250 that came with one obvious cosmetic issue: the tailgate didn’t match the rest of the truck.

The F-250 itself was gold, but a previous owner had replaced the tailgate with a silver one, leaving Meador with a truck that looked like it had been assembled from two different vehicles.

After living with the mismatch, he presumably wasn’t expecting a random encounter to solve the problem.

Then he spotted a silver F-250 driving past after he left Verizon.

The strange part was that this truck had a gold tailgate.

It was essentially the mirror image of Meador’s truck, meaning the two strangers had accidentally ended up owning the exact pieces each other needed.

He chased down the other F-250 and they made a swap

Meador immediately followed the truck and managed to get the driver’s attention.

The two owners eventually pulled into a grocery store parking lot, where they apparently decided there was no reason to make things more complicated than they needed to be.

They grabbed their tools and swapped the tailgates right there in the parking lot.

Just like that, two trucks that had spent years with mismatched tailgates were suddenly color-matched.

Photos shared alongside Meador’s story showed the two F-250s parked next to each other before the swap, with their mismatched tailgates making them look almost deliberately coordinated. After the swap, both trucks looked dramatically more complete.

The story quickly spread online, with the original post gaining attention on Facebook before going viral, where people were overjoyed about the encounter.

It’s the kind of car-owner interaction that would be almost impossible to plan.

Two strangers happened to own two old Ford F-250s with opposite problems, happened to cross paths, and happened to realize they could fix both trucks in the time it took to find a parking space.

Not bad for a trip to Verizon.
