The Ford Focus as we know it is bowing out after more than two decades on the road.

But if you thought the name was gone for good, think again.

A new report says the Focus could return in 2027 – only not in the shape you remember.

And that twist is already stirring strong feelings online.

Ford’s plan to bring back the Focus as an SUV

This November marks the final build of the Ford Focus hatch in Germany, with the Saarlouis factory closing soon after.

That looks like the end of the story, yet Ford isn’t ready to let the badge disappear.

Reports from Europe say the Focus name could resurface in 2027 on a mid-size crossover.

The car would be built in Spain at Ford’s Valencia site – a plant with enough capacity to handle 300,000 vehicles a year.

Interestingly, the Focus SUV won’t replace the Kuga, which American buyers know as the Escape (pictured below).

Even though the two models would be close in size, Ford plans to sell them side by side.

It’s a way to stack the lineup with more crossovers instead of fewer.

Powertrains are expected to cover a wide range, from hybrid to full EV.

The hardware will likely mirror what the Kuga already uses, while the bones come from Ford’s C2 platform.

That’s the same architecture found under the Bronco Sport, Maverick, Mondeo, and the outgoing Focus hatch itself.

Ford has done this sort of revival before

Not every Focus fan is celebrating.

The hatch was known for its handling, balance, fun, and everyday practicality

A taller, heavier crossover to some feels like a step away from what made it special.

Some on Reddit see it as Ford cashing in on a familiar name, nothing more.

Others argue it could work out fine, pointing to Subaru’s Crosstrek, which grew out of the Impreza and went on to outsell it.

That example hints at how mainstream buyers might embrace the Focus SUV, even if purists call it a betrayal.

And Ford has its own history to point to as well: the Puma and Capri once stood for small coupes but now survive as electric crossovers.

Both have been strong sellers, with the Puma shifting more than 64,000 units in just the first five months of 2025 and the Kuga topping 105,000 in 2024.

If the Ford Focus SUV follows the same path, it could be another crowd-pleaser.

No matter what the purists think.

Ford might keep the Focus badge alive, but whether it still feels like a Focus is another matter.
