Ford Maverick outsold the Ranger 2-to-1 as it celebrated its best ever year in 2025

Last year, the Ford Maverick outsold the Ford Ranger by a huge margin.

Two Mavericks were sold for every Ranger that left the showroom.

This means that the market has spoken clearly, and it means that American buyers – for once – picked the smaller vehicle over the larger one.

But there are probably a couple of logical reasons.

The Ford Maverick is now a best-seller

The compact Ford Maverick is now a best-seller, outselling its mid-size sibling, the Ranger, by a staggering two-to-one margin.

In 2025, the Maverick moved over 150,000 units, roughly doubling the Ranger’s volume.

It is smaller and more efficient, and that probably makes it more attractive to urban buyers who prioritize factors like fuel economy and practicality over towing capacity.

We can think of a couple of reasons why this happened, starting with the engine.

The Maverick (pictured above) is only available with four-cylinder powertrains, as opposed to the Ranger, which also offers a V6.

For some reason, American buyers just don’t like V6s.

Obviously, a V8 is better, but even four-cylinder engines outsell V6s sometimes.

It’s probably just some sort of car-related version of the middle child syndrome.

People either want the base model or the one with all the bells and whistles – not the one in the middle.

The other reason why it outsold the Ranger

The Ford Maverick is a competent off-roader and a nice truck, but it’s smaller than the Ranger (pictured below), which may be seen as unusual.

Historically, American buyers favor larger vehicles.

The bigger the better.

But maybe there’s another explanation aside from the engine.

Ford could probably ‘blame’ the F-Series for this.

If you want a larger truck, the F-Series (especially the F-150) is your go-to.

If you want a smaller truck, the Maverick is the sweet spot.

The Ford Ranger is sort of in no man’s land, and ultimately, that’s probably the main reason why it underperformed.
