Ford trademarked 'Mach 4' which hints something revolutionary might be on the way

Ford just filed a trademark for a new name, Mach 4, for an upcoming vehicle, almost certainly a Ford Mustang.

We don’t know for sure, but everyone’s convinced the next Mustang Mach 4 will be a little different.

We’ve already seen the Mach-E, an electric SUV, and the Mach 4 should be sedan.

Purists, though, probably won’t be happy.

The next Mustang might be very different

We’re used to thinking of the Mustang as a pony car.

Automakers, though, have gotten increasingly comfortable when it comes to reusing names for different vehicles.

The Ford Puma, for example, used to be a sports coupe but it’s now an mid-size crossover SUV.

The same thing happened with the Mustang Mach-E, which is a record-breaking electric SUV.

Ford is apparently working on expanding the Mustang line-up.

Given that Dodge did similar things with the Charger, a four-door Mustang sedan might be the next natural step for the maker.

As for the name, Ford used to reserve ‘Mach’ for limited-edition vehicles, but now wants to use it for an entire brand of cars.

Polestar and DS also did something similar.

Both were originally created as unique names for special vehicles made by Volvo and Citroën respectively, and both are now standalone brands with a focus on EVs.

What we can expect from the Ford Mustang Mach 4

The one thing we know for sure is Ford recently filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the USPTO.

The filing also mentions that the trademark is intended for ‘Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts’.

In addition, data shows that the Mach-E is selling well – it even outsold the ‘normal’ Mustang last year.

But considering recent political events, Ford might decide to keep the internal combustion alive for a little longer.

Especially because most EVs, including the Porsche Taycan and the aforementioned Mach-E, depreciate too fast.

Which basically means that while the Mach 4 might be electric, it’ll probably be also available with an internal combustion option, maybe as a hybrid.

Either way, we can’t wait to see what Ford comes up with next.
