Navigation apps and systems are one of the most used tools in many car owners’ lives, but forget the usual giants, as this alternative to Waze and Google Maps could be your new staple.

With new game-changing features and advanced technology driving it forward, the app was previewed before the start of CES 2026.

The features could stop you from missing turns and address issues when changing lanes.

Plus, the company is also teaming up with a well-known car brand to launch into action.

Meet Mapbox: The app that has seriously clever tech behind it

The age-old debate of Google Maps versus Waze is a battle all drivers face when embarking on long journeys, but now the game could be changed completely.

Mapbox uses 3D technology to make drivers’ lives easier than ever before with the 3D lanes feature, which acts as a magic carpet that guides you into the correct turn that you need to make.

The clever attribute provides lane geometries, 3D models of overpasses, and even lane markings that make the navigation system as realistic as possible, turning the screen into another kind of window.

The feature runs alongside the 3D buildings, with the lanes appearing as they would in real life, while passing landmarks and buildings with intricate details.

The alternative to Waze and Google Maps has big plans in 2026

While the new feature can be utilized both in cars and on your smartphone and is available on Mapbox Navigation SDK, it seems Mapbox has further reached for the stars.

The navigation app has partnered with BMW Group for upcoming vehicles to feature the system, with CEO Peter Sirota teasing big plans for the spring and summer of this year when speaking to News 3 Las Vegas.

“BMW Group works relentlessly to build the best navigation experiences for our drivers, and we know precise lane information in complex intersections makes navigating easy and intuitive.

“We’ve partnered closely with Mapbox to develop advanced navigation experiences for our next-generation offerings,” BMW Group Senior Vice President, Development Digital Services and Infotainment Stephan Durach said.

You have to admit, it would make your life easier – and on roadtrips, that’s the best feature a navigation app can offer.
