Global EV sales have been rocketing, with the switch to electric proving extremely popular.
Recent studies have displayed just how stark the shift in the global car industry has been.
However, EV sales haven’t quite taken off everywhere, with Canada the biggest exception.
In fact, not only have EV sales not risen there, but they have dropped by 23 percent.

Global EV sales rise – but fall hard in Canada
The EV-charged shift in the global car industry has truly been a sight to behold.
In the first five years of the decade, EVs have completely changed the narrative.
Far from being a quirky novelty, they are very much the new driving force of the industry.
In fact, in the first half of 2025 alone, global EV sales reached an incredible 9.1 million units.
This is a remarkable rise of 28 percent from the same time 12 months ago.
However, not every region in the world is seeing the same growth.

Despite sales having risen, North America is not following the same rate of EV growth.
When combined, EV sales in the United States, Canada, and Mexico are up just 3 percent this year.
Mexico is the biggest bright spot, with the country up a whopping 20 percent compared to last year.
The United States isn’t actually doing too badly, with a 6 percent growth reported.
It is America’s northernmost neighbour, however, where things get interesting.
Sales in Canada have fallen by an almost unbelievable 23 percent compared to this time last year.
Is China doing too much of the EV heavy lifting?
Despite making very positive reading for fans of EVs, there is some underlying concern.
For one thing, it is the Chinese market that is doing most of the heavy lifting.
In fact, more than half of the world’s EVs were bought and sold in China this year.
Over 5.5 million sales have been reported in the first half of 2025 – a 32 percent jump.
Europe has also seen a considerable rise, with 2 million new EVs sold in 2025 so far.

That represents a more-than-respectable 26 percent year-on-year increase for the continent.
Spain is the single biggest individual contributor in Europe, with sales up a whopping 85 percent.
That growth is mostly owed to its generous MOVES III incentives program, which was extended in April.
The addition of growth incentives has kept sales very strong in the European nation.
Germany and the United Kingdom are also witnessing decent growth for their respective parts.
The U.K. has seen a 32 percent rise in EV growth, while Germany has seen a massive 40 percent rise in growth.
While EV sales continue to rise, many have wondered whether it’s sustainable into the future.
