Google Maps just been given a serious AI upgrade.
Gemini AI has officially moved in, turning the app into something closer to a personal co-pilot than a GPS.
It’s the biggest change Google Maps has seen in years, and it’s rolling out across Android and iOS before landing in Android Auto.
Now there are four new tricks that make the world’s favorite map feel almost human.

1. Google Maps updates: Conversational commands
The Gemini assistant now sits inside Maps, letting you talk to it in full sentences instead of single prompts.
You can bundle tasks together – like asking for somewhere to stop, what the parking’s like, and how busy it is – and it’ll pull the answers instantly.
It’s designed to feel less like typing into a search bar and more like talking to a passenger who actually knows the area.

2. Landmark navigation
Google’s added real-world reference points to make directions clearer.
Instead of relying on distances or street names alone, Maps now calls out things you can actually see.
Think gas stations, restaurants, or familiar buildings.
It uses Street View data to match visuals with turn-by-turn guidance, cutting down on those last-second lane changes.

3. Proactive traffic alerts
You don’t have to wait for a red line to appear anymore.
Gemini now predicts issues ahead and sends warnings before you hit them, whether it’s congestion, roadworks, or an accident up the road.
This feature is launching in the US first on Android, with more regions expected to follow.
4. Lens in Maps
The new Lens tool gives you a preview of what’s at a destination before you arrive.
Tap a pin and you can ask Gemini about that spot.
How it looks inside, what people order most, or when it’s busiest.
It scans through photos, reviews, and listings in real time to build a quick snapshot of what to expect.

Together, these upgrades shift Maps from a static navigator to a thinking companion.
