The Waze versus Google Maps debate is like a monster that needs feeding.
It’s also fascinating because it involves fact-driven preferences alongside purely subjective ones.
Finding a winner is impossible, but we went looking for hot takes, and we found a few worth mentioning.
Including one from a Redditor who’s still using a system that we all thought was dead.
The difference between Google Maps and Waze
These two apps were created with slightly different premises.
From the start, Google Maps has focused on historical/sensor data, whereas Waze has been driven by real-time community reporting.
In other words, Google Maps prioritizes what it sees from the satellites and aggregated device pings, while Waze prioritizes what drivers see and can learn from other drivers.
Through the years, both apps also implemented features from rivals.

In the meantime, satellite imagery is more detailed, and user reporting is more active because drivers are frustrated by inaccurate routing, like driving down a road they thought was open only to find it shut or jammed.
It is virtually impossible to reduce the number of errors to zero, but we’re getting close to it.
We had a look at various forums, and while nobody agrees on which app to use, they all agree that a combination of all apps is your best bet.
Including one user who mentioned an app most people assumed was long gone.
Get ready for some hot takes

We went on Reddit, the world’s loudest town hall, and scoured various subreddits for answers.
Including one that started with a question: “Do people really think using Waze instead of Google Maps is weird?”
One conversation led to a debate about how Waze used to be, versus how it is now.
“Gmaps is good for walking and researching. Waze is better for driving,” one user wrote.
To which another Redditor replied: “But Waze got really funky in the last two or three years. The app used to be really great, but a lot of complaints logged for some reason.”
Another Redditor pointed out a geographical truism we tend to ignore: different countries use different apps.
“Waze is pretty popular. Google Maps is just far more common, especially outside the USA,” this Redditor said.
And then somebody ended up addressing the inevitable elephant in the room.
“I have used Waze since the beginning, before Google bought them, which is sad because it feels like they are slowly killing the app,” they said.

Another user went for a diplomatic answer.
“I use both. Waze for daily commutes to get around traffic and speed traps, etc. Then I use Google Maps for places and cities that I don’t know,” they wrote.
And then somebody dropped the real bombshell.
“Waze user and map editor since it came out.
“I use it the majority of the time. But I have noticed over the last few months it has driven me directly into a traffic jam. Gmaps seems to work better for routing.
“If I go somewhere I don’t know, I pair Waze on AA with Gmaps on phone and TomTom for camera alerts.”
TomTom?
Beautiful.
That’s a bit like someone saying they use Android for this, iPhone for that, and a BlackBerry for emails in 2026.
