The road with the highest speed limit in the world isn't in Germany, the US or Dubai and is only a recent addition

If you were asked to place the road with the highest speed limit, you would probably imagine it was in Germany, the US, or Dubai.

After all, those three places are notorious for long stretches of road and for loving cars.

But you’d be wrong – it’s in none of the above.

And you might not have heard of it because it’s a very recent addition.

There are some roads where you really do feel the need for speed

For some petrol heads, putting the pedal to the metal is one of life’s greatest joys.

Of all the highways in the world, the Autobahn in Germany may be the most legendary when it comes to no-holds-barred driving.

Plenty of cars have let rip on those roads over the years, from Bugatti Chirons to Lamborghini TT Huracans.

While its unlimited speed was a symbol of freedom and power, polls found that a majority of Germans were keen for a cap on the speed.

At any rate, most people would imagine that the Autobahn has the highest speed limits in the world.

Or perhaps State Highway 130 in Texas would be a good contender with 85mph.

The UAE has its own offerings too, with the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Road once boasting speed limits of 99.4mph, before it was reduced to 87mph to enhance road safety.

But there’s a new contender for the title, and it comes from a country that is often overlooked in discussions about cars.

The Czech Republic has a lot going for it as a country – beautiful landscapes, amazing architecture, and Czech Chimney Cakes.

But it isn’t traditionally known as a car-making superpower like Italy or Germany.

However, the country does have an understated contribution to the world of cars – most notably the Praga Bohema, a $1.35 million road-legal hypercar.

Its police force also has a Ferrari in its fleet; how cool is that?

At any rate, the European nation now has another element to bolster its car cred.

It’s home to the road with the highest speed limit.

A 29-mile stretch of the D3 highway has its speed limit set to 93.2mph.

However, it’s not as cut and dry as it may sound.

This is a pilot project that the Czech government launched last year, and which has been extended to the end of 2026.

And it’s not a speed limit with conditions – drivers may only hit 93mph if there’s low traffic, good visibility, and low risk of ice or strong winds.

So quite a few stipulations, and not quite the let loose mentality you might expect from such a road.

Still, it could be a good tourism draw for drivers with a liking for fast cars and open roads.
