Shopping malls often have cars on display in showrooms or as exhibits, but have you ever wondered how they got there?

Many malls across the US have new vehicles on display to allow folks a closer look.

Occasionally, a car might even be a jackpot prize in a competition.

But what goes into getting the cars inside, and what happens to them next?

How do cars end up on display in shopping malls?

Although footfall to malls is dwindling, as more folks decide to shop online, it’s still a great spot to showcase a new vehicle.

Tesla recently took a Cybertruck to a Vancouver mall so people could test just how strong it really was.

Some marques even have showrooms and dealerships inside shopping malls, so you can buy a new car while you’re shopping for jeans.

Although it may seem like a major undertaking, malls are designed with numerous service corridors that are hidden to shoppers.

Many malls are built with back entrances to receive goods, which would also be large enough for a car to enter.

If there are no such areas available, the car can be driven through the usual front entrance of the mall, usually late at night or very early in the morning to cause as little disruption as possible.

Once inside the mall, the car can just be driven as normal, or the mall may have its own vehicle lift to get it to where it needs to go.

Footage shared online by dealership McClinton Chevrolet & Mitsubishi shows a car being carefully driven through a mall.

What happens next depends on what the car is being used for. If it’s headed to a showroom, it will be kept there so customers can take a look around, hop into the driving seat, and get a feel for the car.

If the cars on display are designed to simply be an exhibit, then they will usually be kept parked with enclosures around them.

Some cars are offered up as jackpot prizes for visitors to the mall, but that’s less common today than it once was.

An abandoned mall become an unlikely parking lot for Tesla vehicles

While keeping cars on display inside shopping malls is nothing new, an abandoned mall out in Missouri ended up becoming a DIY parking lot for unsold Teslas.

Footage shared online showed hundreds of new Teslas, including several Cybertrucks, outside the now-defunct Chesterfield Mall.

“[Tesla] does not have enough capacity at the [local] dealership to park all of the cars they are bringing in,” Tim Lowe, senior VP of leasing for The Staenberg Group, told FOX 2 at the time.

“So they are renting space within the parking lot to store their cars,” he added.
