The Illinois Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias, has rejected hundreds of license plates in 2025, and as the year comes to a close, he has now taken to YouTube to reveal the funniest ones.
License plates can be a reflection of your name and lucky number, a burning passion, a business, or some kind of inside joke.
But from the moment they are stuck on, it’s a reflection of you.
So, it comes as no surprise that the giddy younglings out there have decided to try and create some hilarious tags, and even less of a surprise that plates like ‘BBL’ were rejected.

Why are some license plates banned?
All states in America have a service that allows for private license plates to be formed, offering a range of different backgrounds and customization palettes.
Whether that’s the northern states jumping on the blackout craze or celebrities immortalized with nine-to-five homages.
In fact, they’re becoming so popular that California could soon run out.
But some designs prove to be too controversial to be allowed.
Just as Jeremy Clarkson found out with his controversial plate.
For the most part, these rejections come in the form of crude and hateful requests, with the government trying to keep the streets as clean as possible.

The ban on plates like this isn’t just for the public’s sake, but also the driver, as instantly recognizable plates are easily copied, and just as the owner of a ‘Luvstick’ tag found out, other drivers can rack up tickets on their behalf.
Still, people try, and Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has now revealed some of the submissions that had to be turned down.
Illinois Secretary of State reveals his funniest banned plates
Taking to an upload on the official Illinois Secretary of State account, Giannoulias revealed some of the wildest plates that they had to reject this year.
Starting with ‘BBL’, he struggled to contain his laughter as the plate – also donned by Abraham Lincoln – was plastered with the bum-enhancing acronym.
Other hilarious plates included ‘IBPOOPN’ and acronyms such as ‘ICUP’, while other more outlandish model names were warped to ‘PRIUSSY’.
“If this is how you refer to your Prius, there’s a show on TLC for you,” he said.

License plates are still a phenomenon, with some reaching incredible values, but it’s not quite the free-for-all you might imagine, despite having to be of legal age to drive.
