This is what it looks like inside the Boeing 747 that carries the Space Shuttle Orbiter, on display at Space Center Houston.

The Shuttle Carrier Aircraft was modified by Boeing along with another to help make history with the space organisation.

As you can imagine, inside the aircraft is no ordinary interior, thanks to special modifications needed to accommodate the Space Shuttle Orbiter that was located on the top of the aircraft.

Years after the plane took flight, it was given a different educational purpose in Texas, where modifications were made to withstand the weather conditions.

Boeing is a manufacturer that many plane fans are aware of, but it also had a vital role to play for NASA, too.

The NASA 905 was a Boeing 747 model and was the first and only Shuttle Carrier Aircraft that was actually used until 1990 when NASA 911 came along.

So, curious to see what the plane looked like inside, YouTube content creator Paul Stewart took a tour of the interior, and it was mind-blowing.

However, as you’d expect, it’s not quite like the typical Boeing 747s that are used by airlines today.

Inside, it wasn’t the normal layout that you’d expect as the Boeing was gutted out, with extra weights at the front to cater for the aircraft’s centre gravity moving backwards when the Space Shuttle Orbiter was on board.

Elements such as plastic were also removed to free up some weight on the plane, along with a reinforced fuselage.

Unfortunately, the upper deck was closed when the aviation enthusiast visited, but he did show another piece of footage of a plane similar.

The flight control linkages were on show too, with visitors able to look directly above and into where the captain was sitting.

There was educational material inside the plane to teach people about the orbiter and the 747, with pipes on show that would usually be hidden in a traditional setting.

The power distribution system was also on show, which was used to move the orbiter between landing and launch sites.

The exhibit is on show at the Space Center Houston in Texas, ready for space fans to visit.

“NASA 905 carried space shuttles 223 times and amassed 11,017 flight hours over 42 years. It is the first of two shuttle carrier aircraft,” explained the Space Center.

Plus, the reassembled 747 structure is even flight certifiable, even though the main landing gear beam was cut.

The 747 isn’t just favoured by NASA either

The Boeing 747 is a popular choice within the aviation sphere, and it’s not hard to see why, thanks to its powerful engines and spacious interior.

For example, the five-engine Boeing 747 is among the rarest aircraft ever built, and it has a very specific role.

Plus, another Boeing 747 even became a flying wedding venue as an aviation YouTuber got married high above the clouds.

You can catch the tour of the aircraft here.
