Jay Leno, the famed celebrity TV host turned extreme motorhead, has explained how he has ended up having arguably the best car collection of all time, with over 200 supercars and 150 motorcycles.

Best known for being the face of The Tonight Show for more than 25 years, Jay Leno has always been known to love motors.

Particularly, his YouTube channel, Jay Leno’s Garage, has debuted some of the finest cars on the planet, including iconic one-of-ones from eras gone by.

Now, in a recent podcast, Leno has dipped into his own life archives to reveal how he’s come to have such a wild car collection.

Jay Leno explains how his incredible car collection came to be

Now, most of us vehicle fanatics know Jay Leno for being among the first people in the world to get hold of supercars like the fabled McLaren W1 and for championing classic cars.

But how did he get into his vehicles, having spent so much of his career on camera?

Well, it started when he was in his teens.

Speaking on the Road to Success Podcast, Jay Leno explained that his car obsession came from working on Rolls-Royce services, covered in engine oil as early as 17.

But from then on, he soon landed his TV host roles and left the greasing and delivering behind, and began making some egregious salaries.

From there on, he continued to buy sports cars and began a small collection. However, it was a second-hand McLaren F1 that was his first major purchase, as he landed the one-of-64 supercar for $800k.

Since then, he’s continued to collect hundreds of the finest cars ever made – except anything Ferrari.

As of his latest order, the hand-delivered Ford Mustang GTD, Jay Leno has 214 cars and 168 motorcycles in his garage.

The best of the bunch

Leno’s car collection is pretty much impossible to value, although three of his most expensive cars (the McLaren F1, a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL, and a 1934 Duesenberg Walker Coupe), clock in at $50 million alone.

There’s also a range of cars without price tags, such as a one-off supercar from General Motors designed solely for Leno.

Headliners like the Batman Tumbler keep the collection strong.

Yet his favorite car of all time isn’t like anything from a sci-fi movie, but rather a beast from the 1920s.

Jay Leno intends to continue making content with his supercars for the foreseeable future, claiming that it’s a fun hobby that people clearly find interesting, and it serves a purpose to his YouTube community.
