Move over, Dodge Charger and Model S Plaid, the Lucid Air Sapphire has taken pole position as the fastest American sedan ever made, boasting 1,200hp and a 205mph top speed.

The sedan genre has begun to epitomize the ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ idiom.

New EVs have moved on from the boy-racer low-riding cars like the Charger and BMW 5-Series, looking more mundane and akin to your standard posh Dad car.

But the deceiving appearance shrouds sheer raw power, just as the Lucid Air Sapphire has proven.

The Lucid Air Sapphire crowned the fastest American sedan

Revealed back in 2022, the Lucid Air Sapphire was always touted to be a wrecking ball of an EV, boasting 1,200hp.

It blew Alex Hirschi – AKA Spercar Blondie – away when she previewed it in 2023, with a wild 0-60mph acceleration time of just 1.89 seconds.

Since then, it’s managed to smash quarter-mile speed records and has now been pushed to limits to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid to the fastest American sedan podium.

With a proven top speed of 205mph, it beats the Plaid by 5mph.

It’s proven itself on the track too, completely obliterating a supercharged Dodge Demon 170 in a drag, three times in a row.

Even this customized armored Lucid Air Sapphire has a top speed over 200mph, claiming to be the quickest bulletproof EV.

Worldwide competition

While it might be the fastest American sedan, there is stiff competition from around the globe.

Namely, the Chinese Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has completed a Nürburgring lap faster than any supercar in history, despite being classed as a sedan.

It’s no wonder, considering its 217mph top speed.

The competition is just heating up, too, with Mercedes entering the game with a supercharged EV sedan of its own.

But Lucid, as a relatively fresh-faced manufacturer, has all the time in the world to build upon its American legacy.
