Without using the internet, a pair of YouTubers set out to buy the most interesting car they could find.

Tired of how easy and automated everything has become, they wanted to see what it would take to navigate the world the old-fashioned way.

With just a flip phone, a paper map, and a notepad, they began their offline journey.

In an era where buying a car online is almost as easy as getting takeout, it was certainly more difficult than they bargained for.

The most interesting car wasn’t easy to find without using the internet

Edwin and Will from Top Dead Center shared their challenge in a recent video.

The challenge had a few simple rules.

The car in question had to be road-legal and cost no more than £5,000 ($6,800).

Most importantly, the two men were looking for the most interesting car for the budget. They weren’t keen on simply buying the nearest used Toyota Corolla that may have a million miles on it – or two.

The first thing the duo did was to seek out a few local dealerships that they knew about, even without the internet.

However, none of them had anything memorable.

Along the way, they looked out for vehicles that caught their eye. When they found one, they asked the owner whether they were willing to sell their car.

Obviously, this method didn’t work out very well, given most sane people’s apprehension towards strangers offering to buy their car.

Their next strategy was to check out car magazines. The old-fashioned but reliable way people used to list their cars before the internet.

While they could easily browse and select the vehicles that seemed to fit their criteria, there were still issues.

Not everyone picked up the phone. And unlike online listings, there was no way for the duo to find out whether a car was already sold.

Some listings also had limited information, as the owners tried to squeeze everything into a small space – every bit of print real estate costs money.

The pair finally found a car they wanted and managed to get hold of the owner. But they were disappointed to find out it was too far away to be worth the trouble.

Later, they had an idea.

Recognizing that older people may own the most interesting car possible for a smaller budget, they set off to golf courses, shopping centers, and anywhere else to find some seniors.

The task turned out to be harder than they realized without using the internet, as they couldn’t navigate easily.

Their hypothesis regarding older people having cheaper cars also turned out to be wrong. In fact, many of them seemed to be driving newer and more expensive cars.

The challenge was a roller coaster

Finally, the duo caught a break. They received a phone call from someone who repeatedly assured them that he was not a dealer.

Unfortunately, the cheapest car he had to offer the duo was still above their budget.

Undeterred, they went straight to the seller, hoping to negotiate.

When they arrived, they spotted a Peugeot 205 GTI, which they previously saw with an almost £10,000 ($13,600) price tag.

After much negotiation, they bought the vehicle for £6,500 ($8,800), although it meant that they failed their challenge, exceeding the original budget.

Nevertheless, the duo were happy with their purchase, given that they managed to find the most interesting car possible for their budget, given that the car actually had some rally experience.

In a hilarious turn of events, the vehicle started showing problems almost immediately after they drove it off the lot.

So what’s the moral of the story here?

Doing things without using the internet is really tough, and sometimes, doing things the easy way isn’t necessarily bad.
